The Leadership Portfolio emerges from an academic exercise over the course of my doctoral studies. After completing the coursework and sitting for comprehensive exams I have continued to develop the portfolio as a tool for personal development. This is an online version of what I have in my home office:
The theoretical underpinning of my understanding of leadership is based on the seven key domains of organizational leadership identified by the Indiana Wesleyan University Doctoral program. These seven domains include
1) servant as leader,
2) personal authenticity,
3) organizational theory and research,
4) organizational learning,
5) change, innovation and entrepreneurship,
6) globalization and multiculturalism
7) ethics and leadership.
A more detailed conceptualization of each of these domains is provided below:
Servant as leader
"The great leader is seen as a servant first". Robert K. Greenleaf
The “Leadership Philosophy” paper provides a scholarly demonstration of my theoretical approach towards being a servant leader and a world changer. The practice of servant leadership is implemented through my work with various organizations. This Servant as Leader Commentary and Exhibit addresses leadership projects that were carried out over the course of completing my course work.
Personal authenticity
"Is there some common quality among these Representative Men who have been successful as leaders? I call it the need to be authentic - or, as our dictionaries tell us, conforming to fact and therefore worthy of trust, reliance or belief. While the charismatic has an uncanny outside source of strength, the authentic is strong because he is what he seems to be". Daniel J. Boorstin
Authentic leaders understand that the values and principles they embody communicate immensely to followers. The “Core Worldview” paper provides evidence of my values, principles, and basic philosophy of life and how these inform my approach to leadership. The Authenticity Commentary and Exhibit reflects my passion for living a life that models excellence to the wider society and using my life to be an authentic change agent.
Organizational theory and research
“He who loves practice without theory is like the sailor who boards ship
without a rudder and compass and never knows where he may cast.” Leonardo da Vinci
The scholarly paper, “Nature of Organizations”, explores a variety of elements that facilitate leadership effectiveness in organizations. The Organizational Theory Commentary and Exhibit provides evidence of my efforts in applying sound theory in practical leadership within an organizational setting.
Organizational learning
"An organization's ability to learn, and translate that learning into action rapidly,
is the ultimate competitive advantage". Jack Welch
The "Effective Learning in Organizations" paper attests to my understanding of organizational learning and provides concepts that are useful in bringing organizational learning to any organization. The Organizational Learning Commentary and Exhibit, captures a learning organization initiative that was implemented during coursework.
Change, innovation and entrepreneurship
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world.
Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has". Margaret Mead
The "Leading Change in Organizations" paper provides a scholarly depth of knowledge on the concept of change - how to facilitate or bring it about in organizational settings. The Change, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship Commentary and Exhibit captures an applied project that demonstrates leadership skill in bringing about change in an organization.
Globalization and multiculturalism
Modern organizational leaders require cross-cultural skills that demonstrate an understanding of and ability to manage diverse people. The paper on "Cultural Adaptation and Western Leadership Theory", endeavors to demonstrate the critical need for an appreciation of cultural differences and the need for leadership that carefully addresses globalization and multiculturalism. The Globalization and Multiculturalism Commentary and Exhibit details an applied project that was implemented with the goal of bringing about greater sensitivity to intercultural differences within an organizational setting.
Ethics and leadership
Workplace ethics have become a critical issue in many organizations, a stimulating topic for executives, and an interesting field for researchers and practitioners of leadership. Rampant scandals and problems in many organizations have generated an intense focus on ethical issues in the modern workplace. The "Philosophy of Ethical Leadership" paper endeavors to capture how leaders model good ethical behavior and cultivate it within their organizations. The Ethical Leadership Commentary and Exhibit details an application project and provides practical outcomes that were implemented in an organizational setting towards enhancing the ethical standards of the group.
